The alternative versions of a single gene are known as:

Answer

Alleles.

Rationale

Alleles are different versions of the same gene that arise through mutation and are found at the same location on a chromosome. They can result in different expressions of a trait (such as different eye colors), distinguishing them from traits themselves (the observable outcome), characteristics (a general term), or RNA (a separate molecule involved in gene expression).
